Eight people initially signed up to run in Madison's February 19 mayoral primary, including incumbent Mayor Paul Soglin, though the field is thinning, with activist and former Alder Brenda Konkel dropping out of the race and City of Madison equity coordinator Toriana Pettaway’s spot on the ballot in doubt. They'll be invited to the Barrymore twice in January to discuss their visions for the city, first at a January 9 debate organized by The Capital Times and again at an arts-and-culture-centric January 16 forum presented by Arts + Literature Laboratory and Tone Madison. The first event, part of the Cap Times Talks series, will focus on a broad range of policy issues with Capital Times City Editor Katie Dean and News Editor Jason Joyce moderating. While the specific questions and topics won't be available ahead of time, there's plenty to talk about, from the city's changing economy and growing population to its intractable struggles with racial inequality. Challenging Soglin are District 10 Alder Maurice Cheeks, comedian Nick Hart, software developer Eric Koth, policy scholar and former Alder Satya Rhodes-Conway, and River Alliance executive director Raj Shukla. —Scott Gordon
