Madison hip-hop outfit Fringe Character combines the meandering back-and-forth of MCs Dudu Stinks and Daewong with producer/guitarist Ben Sholl's varied interests in contemporary electronic and R&B sounds. The band, which sometimes expands to a 10-piece complete with horns for live shows, will be using this show to debut a new single, "Ancient Body." A teaser clip hints that the song might draw on the gentle psychedelic vein Fringe Character explored on its most recent full-length, 2017's Phases. (Sholl and frequent Fringe collaborator Greg Brookshire have gone in a similar direction with their new duo, Brahmulus.) Fringe Character shares the bill here with Kainalu, which began as a solo creation of Madison-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Trent Prall and has also morphed into a live band. Kainalu's music and visuals take some cues from Prall's Hawaiian heritage, gracefully weaving those elements into the polished sweep of contemporary psych-pop. His 2017 EP, Bloom Lagoon, played funky rhythms off of airy falsetto vocals and hazy synths and guitars, all of it benefitting from Prall's attention to detail. (Kainalu's bass sound is an especially nice touch, warm and chunky but with an emphatic pluck that recalls Carol Kaye's performances on The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.) Kainalu has been working on a full LP for release in early 2019. —Scott Gordon
