The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (free, also Jan. 27 at 5 p.m., Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.)

  • Union South Marquee 1308 West Dayton Street Madison, WI, 53715 United States (map)

Last year was a dynamic one for small releases, and one of the major standouts was Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. This is a slightly less esoteric entry than Lanthimos’ The Lobster, but no less rewarding in terms of payout. Fans of Bergman and Greek tragedies will surely want to see what promises to be one of several riveting films in Lanthimos’ body of work. Colin Farrell stars here as Dr. Steven Murphy, a seemingly accomplished cardiac surgeon who has it all: a beautiful wife, played by Nicole Kidman, and two young children. He also has a relationship with a young man (Barry Keoghan) that seems innocent enough at first. However, this modern day Greek tragedy builds up to an unbreakable tension. —Edwanike Harbour
